2013年魯伯特·默多克（Rupert Murdoch）屈於投資者壓力而將其年近六旬的出版業務從新聞集團媒介帝國中拆分出來。舊的新聞集團被拆分成新的新聞集團和二十一世紀福克斯公司。新的新聞集團由於其失去了新聞集團娛樂部門的強有力支持，在日漸衰退的出版業中它不得不努力證明其具有增長能力。6月28日，新聞集團正式拆分完畢。

2014年8月7日凌晨，21世紀福克斯發布第四財季財報：營收84.2億美元，同比上漲17%；第四財季每股收益0.45美元，利潤為9.99億美元；這個數字相比上年同期72億美元的收入略為增長。雖然福斯暫時撤回到華納的收購，但默多克對媒體表示，他並未放棄收購之路。

20世紀福克斯影業成為歷史：
在1989年索尼收購哥倫比亞之前，1985年，澳大利亞的報業大亨默多克收購了好萊塢八大電影公司之一的20世紀福克斯，將瀕臨破產的20世紀福克斯變成了自己新聞集團(News Cor.)旗下的一家電影子公司。在新聞集團的運作下，20世紀福克斯死而復生，不僅恢復了昔日的輝煌，而且從此進入了長達20多年的穩定發展期。
2019年，迪士尼宣布收購21世紀福克斯公司，包括其旗下的20世紀福斯影業及電視，但不包括福斯新聞網。21世紀福克斯中，迪士尼未收購的一部分成立了新的公司，保留FOX稱呼，統稱為「福克斯集團」，業務包括新聞、體育、廣播等。
在電影資產中去掉「福斯」名字，被認為是迪士尼做出收購舉動後不可避免的一步，也是為了避免旗下資產與如今的福克斯集團產生名稱混淆。

1935年，二十世紀電影公司和福克斯電影公司宣告合並，二十世紀福克斯正式登場了，這家新公司也是最晚成立的好萊塢大公司。實際上，早在1915年，威廉·福克斯就創建了福克斯電影公司，當時，他把自己的兩家電影公司，主營電影發行的偉大紐約公司和製片的票房吸引力電影公司合而為一，並以自己的姓氏命名這家新公司。威廉·福克斯是好萊塢最早的電影大亨之一，與其他電影大亨不同，威廉·福克斯最大的興趣在建造新電影院和收購電影院上，相比之下，製作電影只算是第二位的。威廉·福克斯還是好萊塢最早進行垂直經營的電影大亨，就是擁有製片、發行和放映全套業務。

二十世紀電影公司創建於1932年，創始人有聯藝電影公司的前任總裁約瑟夫·辛克，華納兄弟的製片人達瑞爾·扎努克，福克斯電影公司的威廉·格茨和雷蒙德·格里菲斯，這家公司主要業務是製作電影，雖然公司能夠得到聯藝和米高梅在資金上的支持，而且出品了好幾部相當成功的影片，但二十世紀電影公司仍是家小公司，而且沒有自己的發行渠道。
1935年5月31日，二十世紀合並了困境中的福克斯，這是樁老鼠吃大象的交易，因為福克斯光是電影院就有500多家。達瑞爾·扎努克立即著手簽下了幾個大有前途的新星，包括亨利·方達和貝蒂·嘉寶，不久，又挖掘出一顆搖錢樹，童星秀蘭·鄧波兒。到了二戰時期，依靠這些明星和歌舞片、傳記片，二十世紀福克斯已經成為好萊塢最能賺錢的公司，代表作有《君子協定》、《飛去來器》和《毒龍潭》。
二、1946—1983年 長長的挫折和《音樂之聲》
二戰後，電影觀眾開始流失，電視的興起也對電影業造成很大打擊。二十世紀福克斯想依靠增加電影院的數量度過難關，然而法院裁決，大的發行公司必須與放映業分離，公司因此失去了一半的電影院。五十年代，二十世紀福克斯把希望寄託在超大銀幕和立體電影這些新技術上。
新技術最初的確很能吸引觀眾，但到了1956年，票房又開始退潮，這一年，達瑞爾·扎努克因為一樁緋聞宣布退休。六十年代初，二十世紀福克斯麻煩纏身，主要是因為在《埃及艷後》這部電影上花了太多的錢，其中包括女主演伊麗莎白??泰勒的片酬100萬美元，但影片的票房又不夠理想。
之後，達瑞爾·扎努克回到公司，通過推出新聞片和一些成本低廉但很受歡迎的影片，還有有史以來最賣座的影片《音樂之聲》，這家老製片廠恢復了自己作為一家大電影公司的地位。
從1969年到1971年，達瑞爾·扎努克在二十世紀福克斯的最後三年是不成功的，因為幾部大製作接連失敗，但他的繼任者小阿蘭·萊德及時調整了公司的發展方向，決定為年輕的觀眾製作電影，結果就是出現了《星球大戰》三部曲這樣的經典之作，以及傳記片《巴頓將軍》。
三、1984之後
1984年，來自澳大利亞的傳媒巨頭魯伯特·默多克從馬克·里奇和馬文·戴維斯手中買下二十世紀福克斯，他對電影部門沒有做出很大調整，但從派拉蒙公司挖來巴里·迪勒，創建了福克斯電視網。電視網對電影公司是很有益處的，比如，2007年，二十世紀福克斯就把極受歡迎的動畫電視劇《辛普森一家》搬上了大銀幕。
對二十世紀福克斯來說，當年轟動一時的《星球大戰》到了二十一世紀，仍然大有潛力可挖，新的《星球大戰》三部曲全球總票房超過了26億美元，這家公司的另一套賣座系列電影是《X戰警》，因為這套電影的成績是呈上升之勢，所以新的續集也在籌備之中。二十世紀福克斯的其它賣座片還有《小鬼當家》系列、《獨立日》、《荒島餘生》和《博物館之夜》。
